Where to Eat

PrintAs most of you probably already know, Alyson and Ken have a bit of a soft spot when it comes to food. Unfortunately, Blacksburg doesn’t share our gastronomic enthusiasm. As a small college town, it is illegal for an establishment to serve only alcohol; a certain portion of each bar/restaurant’s income must come from food sales. The result? A whole lot of places in the C- to B range when it comes to food quality.

But don’t worry, we’ve staked the place out.

We started a food blog several months ago that chronicles our thoughts about the various places to eat around town. Assuming you have some spare time while you’re in town, that you get hungry, and that you’d like to try something unique to town, you might want to give it a look. You can find it here.

Alternatively, you can just try one of the handful of restaurants we’ve actually enjoyed thus far. And if it’s not on the list, you probably shouldn’t go. We’ve been everywhere.

  • Gillie’s – A vegetarian restaurant that is so good, you’ll like it even if you’re not a vegetarian (review)
  • 622 North – A classier joint with tasty seasonal specials, imaginative sandwiches, and the best beer list in town (review)
  • Lefty’s – A burger joint that has a big menu but lacks execution outside of beef patties on sourdough (review)
  • London Underground – Come here for bacon onion marmalade and thank us later (review)
  • The Palisades – In a truly tiny town 30 minutes west of Blacksburg, a great place to stop on the way into town for most of you, or on the way back out of town for the most talked about brunch around
  • Our Daily Bread – Simple French breakfast and lunch or fancy, elegant dinner (review)
  • Excellent Table – The only ethnic cuisine in town worth eating. Great if you want to pick something up to take back to your room (review)
  • Champs – The place to go to watch college football with some great sandwich and burger options (review)
